How Sharpology Knives Are Made

P.S. this is a photo of our new facility which will launch by October 2026. yes this is its current state... we'll update this picture as it looks more and more like our dream shop. keep an eye on our Instagram stories to keep up with the build

One of the questions we're asked most often is: "Where are your knives made?"

It's a fair question, and one that deserves a straightforward answer. The knife industry is full of marketing buzzwords and vague claims. Rather than hiding behind them, we'd rather explain exactly how our knives are made, why we've made those decisions, and what we believe actually matters when building a great knife.

There Is No One Way to Build a Knife

Many people picture a knife company starting with raw steel, forging every blade, machining every handle, making every screw, and assembling everything under one roof.

The reality is very different.

Most knife manufacturers, from small custom makers to some of the biggest brands in the world, work with specialized manufacturing partners. Some make their own blades but outsource handles. Others machine their own handles but source their steel elsewhere. Modern manufacturing is built around specialization, and there's nothing wrong with that.

At Sharpology, every knife starts with a design. We specify the steel, blade geometry, edge geometry, heat treatment, finish, and overall performance targets. We work with trusted manufacturing partners to produce our steel and CNC machine many of our handles and scales to our specifications. Our current partners are located in Japan, Korea, China, Germany, and Canada. Those components are then finished, assembled, inspected, and quality controlled here in Newmarket, Ontario, with much of the heat treatment completed in-house.

Every knife is built with one rule: exceptional real-world performance.

It's About More Than Steel

One of the biggest misconceptions in the knife world is that steel alone determines how good a knife is. Steel is important, but it's only one part of the equation. We choose steels that offer the best balance of edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and value for their intended use. For example, VG10 has become one of our favorites because it delivers outstanding all-around performance without sacrificing durability or becoming difficult to maintain.

Having sharpened well over 50,000 knives, we've also learned that geometry is just as important as steel. Blade thickness, grind, edge angle, and profile all have a huge impact on how a knife moves through material. Two knives made from the exact same steel can perform completely differently simply because of their geometry.

Heat treatment is equally important. Too hard and a blade becomes brittle. Too soft and it won't hold an edge. Finding the right balance is what separates a knife that performs well for years from one that only looks good on paper. Much of our heat treatment is completed in-house so we can better control the final performance of every blade.

When you combine the right steel with the right geometry and the right heat treatment, you end up with a knife that performs far beyond what any single specification on a product page can describe.

Why We Build Knives This Way

While we'd love to manufacture every single component in-house, it's simply not economically feasible in Canada unless you're building blades at a very high price point. Knives made entirely in-house often sell for well over $2,000. Sharpology also offers a custom knife program for those looking to own the knife of their dreams. Every custom knife is designed around the customer's vision and built specifically for them. Because each piece is made individually, our waitlist currently hovers around three years, and most projects also cost several thousand dollars.

Our production knives are designed with a different goal in mind. We want to bring the same engineering philosophy, materials knowledge, and performance that go into our custom work to as many people as possible at a price that's far more accessible. As we continue to grow, we'll keep investing in proprietary designs, custom components, and expanded manufacturing capabilities while standing behind every knife with our Lifetime Sharpening service and Lifetime Guarantee.

If you're curious about how knives are really made, we'd love to show you.

Our bladesmithing courses take you through the same principles we use when designing our own knives. You'll learn about steel selection, geometry, heat treatment, grinding, finishing, and assembly while forging and building your own knife from start to finish.

There's no better way to understand what goes into a great knife than making one yourself.

We're proud of how we build our products and believe transparency builds trust. Whether you're purchasing one of our production knives, commissioning a custom blade, or forging your own in one of our courses, we hope you'll come away with a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship, engineering, and science behind every Sharpology knife.
